It’s fall in Indiana, which has the Glander Rochford Orthodontics team thinking about football, basketball, and all things sports!
We hear the question “can I play sports with braces?” all the time. It’s an important thing to consider, because there is an increased risk to certain mouth injuries when you are wearing traditional braces with brackets. This is true for children and adults that are active in any way, not just sports.
The short answer is YES you can wear braces and still play sports, and we will cover how you can play sports and keep your mouth as safe as possible.
Tips for Playing Sports with Braces
Wear a Mouthguard
We want you to keep your mouth as safe as possible, and the easiest way to do this is to wear a mouthguard to protect your teeth from potential harm. Wearing a mouthguard is a great idea in sports such as baseball, football, basketball, soccer, tennis, volleyball, lacrosse, ultimate frisbee, and any other sport where your mouth may experience trauma (even if it’s unexpected). Where can you get this mouthguard? We carry mouthguards at the office! Just let us know that you need one.
Carry Wax
Hopefully, you don’t undergo any injuries while playing your favorite sports, but sometimes accidents happen. For minor accidents, a broken bracket may occur. If you experience a broken bracket, cover the uncomfortable portion with wax and come into our office when we are open at your earliest convenience and we can easily fix your bracket for you.
Consider Invisalign
If you are very active and play many sports or a contact sport, Invisalign may be a better option for you than traditional braces. You can talk with Dr. Glander or Dr. Rochford about this in your complimentary consultation.
